The calculator estimates your maximum heart rate as 220 − age, then your heart-rate reserve (maximum − resting). Each target is resting + reserve × intensity — the Karvonen method — shown for five zones from 50% to 100% of reserve. The 220 − age rule is an average; your real maximum can be 10–20 bpm higher or lower. The formula: Target = resting + (220 − age − resting) × intensity. Intensity is a percent of heart-rate reserve, e.g. 0.5 to 0.7 for moderate exercise.
